Biloxi High School AFJROTC Unit MS-781 is Best on the Coast!
 

Welcome to the award winning Air Force JROTC Unit MS-781! Each school year, the corps of
cadets is recognized as a “Distinguished Unit” by Headquarters Air Force JROTC. Following
the formal unit inspection last school year, the program scored 100% earning the “Distinguished
Unit with Merit” designation! As a program, AFJROTC unit MS-781 is described by the Air
Force Regional Director as the “Powerhouse” program on the gulf coast.

AFJROTC Unit MS-781 is led by two instructors, Lt Colonel Philip Byrd and Master Sgt Karen
Chachere who have over 60 years of Air Force experience. Both instructors earned the
“Outstanding Instructor Award” from HQ AFJROTC commander, Colonel Matthew Tipton,
Director of AFJROTC headquartered at Maxwell AFB, AL!
About the corps: The team is 125 cadets and growing! Have your student join our award
winning team!

- “Outstanding Instructor Award” to Lt Colonel Phil Byrd and MSgt Karen Chachere
- Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) District 1 “Instructor of the Year” award to MSgt Karen Chachere
- Back-to-back “Distinguished Unit with Merit” recognition in 2024 and 2025; HQ Air Force JROTC
- “Right of Line” Award as the best of 16 JROTC programs in the southeast;

Gulf Coast Veterans Day Parade Committee
- Air Force ROTC College Scholarship award recipient – Cadet Wince
- VFW Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy scholarship recipient – Cadet Miller
- American Legion Oratory Competition scholarship recipients – Twin Sisters Cadet Sharpe and Cadet Miller
- 2,265 Community Service Hours including 33 Honor Guard US Flag presentations!
- Presented the US Flag as Honor Guard supporting “The Wall that Heals” Vietnam Wall Memorial, US Southern District Court Naturalization Ceremony, 5 home football games and 12 home softball games!
- Led the push to garner 312 pints of blood for drive supporting a Biloxi High School student with cancer
- Go to JROTC program for the City of Biloxi and Harrison County-- supporting 61 community outreach functions

AFJROTC Goal:  The goal of the program is to instill in high school students the values of citizenship, service to the United States (including an introduction to service opportunities in military, national and public service), and personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.
